Some of the special gifts which God gave to the Virgin Mary are: (1) her Immaculate Conception, (2) her perpetual virginity,
(3) becoming the Mother of God and the Mother of the Church, and (4) her Assumption.

1. One special gift which God gave to the Virgin Mary was her Immaculate Conception.

In view of the merits of her Divine Son, Mary enjoyed the privilege of being preserved from all stain of Original Sin. From the moment of her Immaculate Conception, God willed that she should crush the head of the serpent, having decided from all eternity to make her the Mother of the Incarnate Word. The Blessed Virgin Mary was never, even for an instant, subject to the evil spirit. She remained in the state of sanctifying grace forever.

2. A second special gift which God gave to the Virgin Mary was her perpetual virginity.

St. Luke’s Gospel tells us that Mary was a virgin when she conceived the Son of God in her womb—not by the human seed of Joseph—but by the power of God which overshadowed her and by the Holy Spirit who descended upon her. Also, an angel of the Lord reassured St. Joseph that the Holy Spirit had caused Mary to conceive the Son of God, and that he should not fear to take her as his wife. Moreover, Mary maintained her real and perpetual virginity before, during and after giving birth to Jesus. In her liturgy from time immemorial, the Church has celebrated Mary as the “Ever-virgin,” the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son.”

3. A third special gift which God gave to the Virgin Mary was that she became the Mother of God and the Mother of the Church.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the collaborator with the Divine Word and the Holy Spirit in the mighty work of the Incarnation, and she also collaborates in the essential role in the work of sanctifying souls. Her dignity as the Mother of God and as the Mother of the Church, her role as Mediatrix of All Graces, and her own perfect holiness obtain for her a place of singular importance in the sublime work of imitating Christ.

4. A fourth special gift which God gave to the Virgin Mary was her Assumption.

At the end of her life on earth, our Blessed Lady was triumphantly assumed into Heaven with her soul and body, since she had such a special place in the history of salvation. She was crowned Queen of Heaven by her Divine Son. The dogma of the Assumption—celebrated in one of the most ancient and solemn of Mary’s feasts—was infallibly defined at Rome, on November 1, 1950, by Pope Pius XII.
