Yes, the Catholic Church has always taught, and will always teach, that Jesus is truly God, existing from all eternity together with the Father and the Holy Spirit. It is He who, upholding the universe with His almighty power, came and “dwelt among us” (John 1:14), as the Word made flesh.

St. John said, “The life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was made manifest to us.” (1 John 1:2), and “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).

In the Prologue to St. John’s Gospel, Jesus, the Word of God, is referred to as a divine Person, existing in the beginning with God the Father. St. John said: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father” (John 1:1, 3, 14).

Jesus the man, then, is also the eternal Word of God.
